Apple may be preparing to add native support for Google Cast on iPhones with iOS 27, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Apple has long used its proprietary AirPlay protocol as the default screen-casting tech on iPhones. However, a change may be in order, thanks to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires smartphone manufacturers to open up features to third-party providers, Gurman says.
You can already cast content from an iPhone to a non-Apple display through apps that integrate Google’s Cast SDK. If Apple adds support for Google Cast at a system level, you’d be able to beam all kinds of content from your iPhone to a TV or speaker that supports Google Cast.
You’d also be able to change your iPhone’s default casting framework from AirPlay to Google Cast, sources tell Gurman. The EU’s DMA has already forced Apple to allow third-party App Stores in the 27-member bloc, so it won’t be surprising to see casting get the same flexibility.
We should get confirmation on this during Apple’s WWDC keynote on June 8. Note that even if Apple adds support for Google Cast, it may be limited to iPhones in the EU member countries.
