HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Windward Oahu family is trying to save what is left of their home after it was flooded in this week’s storm, and a second mishap is making the cleanup process even more distressing.
The three-bedroom home along Kawailoa Road across from Kailua Beach Park was not inundated with just rainwater on Friday.
“Later on that night, the sewer came up, so in the morning, when we came back to check, there was just raw sewage all over everything, the entire house,” said a woman who grew up in the home, and whose 72-year-old mother was living there.
The woman did not want to be identified, but spoke fondly of the house.
“We lived here for the past 25 years and this is our house, our home, where everybody comes, friends, family just stops by. Our gathering place. But now, we have to find a new one,” the woman added.
Eliza Talbot lives in the unit above, and while her home was not damaged, the flood trapped her and her family in.
“What we had to do was use paddle boards and kayaks and stuff, just to get my kid out to the car and get our backs out and stuff so that we could stay somewhere else,” Talbot said.
While the family below cleaned the flood-damaged unit, City and County crews were also busy on Sunday clearing out the rest of the flood water on the lane that turned into a knee-deep lake.
“I know they’ve been really overwhelmed the past few days and it’s been hard to get here but, we’re really grateful but I don’t know what, I don’t even know how you fix this. It’s just so, it’s gross,” Talbot shared.
The family whose home flooded must also figure out whether insurance will help pay for the damages.
“We just have to see what happens next and how to move forward from here, just try to get all our belongings out, whatever is salvageable, which, not much,” the woman said.
