Troy Baker wants to make his own video game. Baker has starred in a number of high-profile video games over the years, with the likes of Uncharted’s Sam, The Last of Us’ Joel and Indy from Indiana Jones and the Great Circle all to his name. However, he would also like to leave his mark on the other side of the camera, and make his own game one day.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Baker reflected on Abubakar Salim’s career trajectory. Salim, who has starred as Assassin’s Creed Origin’s Bayek among other roles, started his own video game development studio known as Surgent Studios several years ago, and has since released titles such as the acclaimed Tales of Kenzera: Zau. So, would Baker want to go down the same path?
“I love Abu, I played the hell out of his games,” Baker tells Eurogamer. “He is someone who has a deep passion for games, and has found a way to turn that into a great business endeavour for him. I’ve had an incredible opportunity working with the best in this industry, it’s insane – Ken Levine, Hideo Kojima, Neil Druckmann, Todd Howard, Vince Zampella – these people are paragons of the industry. I’ve worked with these people, and I’ve learned so much from them.
“And, what I am excited about doing is taking those tenets, taking those principles of wildly successful titles – not just in terms of sales and figures, but the stories that have defined the industry – and being able to innovate and replicate and emulate those processes and practices into the stories that I want to tell.”
Baker says he is now “beginning the conversations” of what story he wants to tell, and who he wants to tell it with. “Somebody asked me in one of those meetings: ‘what’s your timeline?’, and I said ‘not rushed’,” Baker continues.
“So, I am going to take my time, because I want to make sure that, when I finally do tell a story, it’s one of just as high a caliber of those that I am trying to emulate.”
Baker’s most recent roles include Mouse: P.I. for Hire’s protagonist Jack Pepper and of course as Indiana Jones in the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Following its acclaimed release on Xbox, PC and PlayStation, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will make its Switch 2 debut later this year, on 12th May.
“Smart, fun and so very Indiana Jones, The Great Circle is a stealth action tour de force that marks a bold new era for MachineGames,” reads our original five star review from 2024.
