(NewsNation) — Google is rolling out a new security feature that will help uncover spyware attacks, but it comes with a catch: You have to opt in to get it.
The new feature, called “Intrusion Logging,” is part of Android’s Advanced Protection Mode, a special security mode that enables certain features to make phones and other Android devices harder to hack.
Advanced Protection Mode is designed to counter government spyware attacks and police forensic devices that try to extract data from a person’s phone, according to TechCrunch.

Intrusion Logging creates and collects logs from an Android device once a day and stores them encrypted in a user’s Google account in the cloud. Uploading the logs to the cloud could potentially prevent spyware from deleting evidence of device compromise.
The feature keeps track of things, including when the phone was unlocked, when applications have been installed and uninstalled and what websites and servers the phone connected to.
Google said its Advanced Protection Mode and Intrusion Logging are meant for people who may be at risk of attacks involving spyware, such as journalists, activists and political dissidents.
