An ongoing bug with Android XR has left Samsung’s Galaxy XR headsets in rough shape, with serious performance issues that Google is now rolling out a fix for.
Update 5/7: Google has confirmed a fix is now rolling out. Update vI610UEU2AZD8 is rolling out to Galaxy XR now and, with it, “a series of system stability and performance optimizations” as Google explains. Early reactions to the update seem to prove that Google’s fix did the trick, with the headset performing “smoother,” but crashes are still apparently happening.
Our original coverage follows.
Reports from Samsung Galaxy XR owners on Reddit have pinpointed some serious performance issues that leave the headsets, as described by one user, “functionally useless.” Framerates within apps and the general UI slow to a crawl, if the headset doesn’t freeze entirely.
Users have noticed that the problem is related to a memory leak.
Google has confirmed it is aware of the issue, with Grace, a Community Engagement Manager, explaining:
Hey everyone, I’ve been following the comments here and I want to acknowledge your concerns. It is clear that the current experience is not meeting expectations, and I fully understand your frustration.
The team is fully aware of this issue and we have made getting a patch out to everyone our absolute top priority. I will post an update as soon as we have a concrete timeline for the fix. Thanks for your patience while we get this sorted out.
A fix isn’t available just yet, but it’s apparently the “absolute top priority.”
